2026 tournament format
World Cup 2026 Format Quiz: Can You Explain the New Structure?
The 2026 World Cup features 48 teams divided into 12 groups of four. Thirty-two teams advance to a new Round of 32: the top two teams from every group plus the eight best third-place teams.
The group stage
Each of the 48 teams plays three group-stage matches. With 12 groups of four, the tournament contains 72 group matches. The larger field creates more qualification combinations than the 32-team format used in recent editions.
Who reaches the Round of 32?
The first- and second-place teams in all 12 groups qualify, producing 24 teams. The eight best third-place teams also advance. That creates a 32-team knockout bracket.
The knockout path
From the Round of 32, the tournament uses direct elimination: Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, third-place match, and final. A finalist can therefore play eight matches instead of the seven played by finalists under the previous format.
Three host nations
Canada, Mexico, and the United States share hosting duties. FIFA identifies 16 host cities across the three countries. This is the first men's World Cup jointly hosted by three nations.
